With the ideas and input from both anglers and boatmen who fish and work on technically demanding rivers, we have now designed and developed our Alta Classic Fly Reel.

Our focus was to produce a reel that is a mechanical masterpiece, reliable, has excellent ergonomics, precision components and is a thing of beauty. These factors, combined with our research and development, and following in the footsteps of world-renowned reel maker, Stanley Bogdan, have led us to manufacture a traditional drum drag style reel to be relied upon in the heat of battle, with a silky smooth powerful audible drag, combined with 2:1 gearing. We have sourced and machined the finest modern materials and components from across the globe and hand finish each reel in Scotland. This style of reel is one that salmon fishermen worldwide have grown to trust and desire for decades.

User Instructions & Warranty Details

The brake is designed to operate only on the outward rotation of the spool and is actuated by the lever on the back plate. The brake can be turned to full drag or any position in between by turning the top lever in the half circle from right to left and has 10 positions. Each Salmon reel has a gear ratio of 2:1 and the drag should be tested with the line on the reel and not by turning the handle backward. Loading the backing and fly line onto the reel should be completed by hand under even tension. There is an optional click on the outward rotation of the spool and this can be turned on or off by rotating the lower knurled knob on the back plate.

A high-quality engineers screwdriver is required to take the reel apart so not to mark or damage the screw heads. Loosen the three screws on the front plate about two turns or until they clear the frame indent and push toward the centre of the reel. Tighten slightly to prevent screws from falling back into the indents. Lift out the front plate and remove the spool.

To reassemble, place the spool on shaft making sure that the slot in the spool is engaged with the lugs on the ratchet then line up the locating pin on the front plate with slot in the frame and slowly push into place. Loosen the three plate screws and push into the frame indents and then fully tighten.  Please do not completely disassemble your reel as this may cause damage or mechanical failure and will not be covered by warranty.

To lubricate the reel, remove the knurled dust cap from the centre of the back plate and place a drop of high-quality reel oil in the centre hole. Also, oil behind handle on front plate if required.

Each Alta Classic Fly reel is individually serial numbered and is covered by our Unconditional Lifetime Original User Warranty. This warranty is your assurance against defects in materials and craftsmanship.

The warranty does not cover lost parts, intentional breakage, misuse, neglect, cosmetic wear or scratches.

For warranty work, the reel must be returned to us. It should be properly packaged and insured, as we will be unable to assist with any damage or loss in transit claims.

Damaged reels can be repaired at a reasonable cost, depending upon the degree of damage and work required to complete. We will examine the reel and send you a quotation for the final costs.
